When you're creating with traditional clay, the most important step is to remove any air from the clay. Air bubbles trapped in clay can explode during the firing process, destroying your creation. Removing air from clay is a process called wedging, and this is how you can create your own wedging stone.
1. Follow the instructions to mix Plaster of Paris on the box. There will be a ratio of powder to water.
2. Measure carefully and combine in the mixing bowl.
3. Mix powder and water thoroughly.
4. Pour mixture into cookie sheet.
5. Set cookie sheet with mixture in it on a low traffic, warm, dry place to set. The mixture will technically set in just a couple hours, but I let mine set for a couple days to ensure its hard.
Now that you've got your wedging stone, here's a tutorial on how to wedge clay.
If you don't have a kiln, and you don't want to dig a pit fire in your yard, then you'll want to find a kiln near your that can fire your clay for a fee.
Firing fees are usually affordable. What you *will* want to do is contact the organization near you with the kiln you want to use, and ask them "What Cone Clay do you fire?".
When you know what Cone clay the kiln will fire, you will know what Cone clay you should buy. Future You will thank Present Day You for having taken this step.
