Gather unto you some supplies:
Time of work: 30 minutes tops
Time from start to finish: Days to weeks depending on the vegetable
Friends. Am I right? We had a great time harvesting vegetables from my garden to create the most delicious meal a group of friends could ever wish for. The next day I had to admit to all involved that I'd bought those vegetables from the store and put them in the ground.
I ask you, who was harmed? Certainly not the dried-out onion that was given new life and a second chance for me to eat it.
The onions, garlic, horseradish, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, radishes, ginger and yes sometimes even the celery, that you have in your refrigerator right now aren't dead: They're just sleeping.
Here's a fun way to release an onion or garlic clove from the captivity of your crisper and get fresh greens for your recipes.
1. Place the item roots side down in a dish so that the bottom half of the item is submerged in water. Leave the top half free to breathe.
2. Place the dish in a warm sunny spot for a few days.
3. Observe daily until roots sprout and grow from the submerged half of the item
4. When it's got new roots growing, plant it in a pot with soil. Keep the soil moist.
5. In a few days, it will grow green stalks (which I call scallions, and I don't wish to spark a debate in this, but there are sources that will agree with this practice and sources which will disagree).
6. Cut the green stalks and use them for cooking delicious recipes. Keep watering the vegetable. It will grow more stalks. Continue for many days to several weeks.
