Gather unto you some supplies:
• Sculpey
• Parchment Paper
• Rolling Pin
• Pyrex baking dish or Sculpey Oven Safe Work Mat
• Ruler or tape measure
Time of work: From a few minutes to a few hours
Baking time: Depends on the thickness of the piece
Time from start to finish: Up to you + baking time
The warmer the Sculpey, the easier it is to form. Break off a piece of the block and roll it between your hands like dough to get it warmed up.
If you want to create flat medallions like the ones shown below in the photo gallery:
1. Use a ball of Sculpey about one inch in diameter and place it on some parchment paper.
2. Place parchment paper over it and use a rolling pin to roll it flat.
A flat Sculpey medallion is a perfect place to carve your message of positive feelings before baking it. I suppose you could carve other messages if that’s what you’re into.
If you want to make a complicated shape like a sculpture:
1. You can try molding it from a solid ball of Sculpey.
2. You can use slabs of flat rolled Sculpey (slab building)
I used a combination of flat sheets of Sculpey and molding shapes from balls of Sculpey to create the gnome shown here.
Bake the Sculpey according to the directions on the package, which instruct a temperature and a baking time based on the thickness of the item.
After baking, Scupley takes on acrylic paint very well.
I’ve used acrylic paint to detail the body of the gnome sculpture. I used a paintbrush to apply glue to the hat, and then sprinkled on fragments of rock that I dug up somewhere in the American northwest, probably Oregon or Idaho. Who can keep track of all the places they’ve gone to dig up rock fragments? Certainly not me. If I had any glitter or abalone shell fragments, I would have used that. One does what one can with the materials at ones disposal.
Now I know what you’re going to ask me: “Tallullabelle, clearly you have had, at some point, the wherewithal to purchase a wide variety of items in pursuit of your endeavors. I mean, my God, Tallullabelle, where did you get the Sculpey? You didn’t hatch it from a magic egg you found in your attic, did you? Could you not have purchased some glitter as well?” Well, the truth is, I don’t have an answer for you. Can we move on?
The gnome sits on a piece of wood engraved with a Helm of Awe. There’s a post on carving glyphs here.
The instructions on the package will tell you to bake it for a certain length of time based on the thickness of the piece
